Born in the Canary Islands and now based in Glasgow, accordionist Sofía Ros was named BBC Radio Scotland Young Classical Musician of the Year in 2025, following her solo debut with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra performing Astor Piazzolla’s Aconcagua Concerto under the baton of Andrew Gourlay at Glasgow City Halls.
She has appeared as a soloist with the Concerto Orchestra of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, after winning First Prize in the institution’s 2024 Concerto Competition. Her 2025/26 season includes concerts supported by the Hattori Foundation and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, as well as engagements in Spain with the International Masters Series of Fundación Eutherpe and the Alicante Concert Society during the 2026/27 season.
Sofía has performed at major international venues including Carnegie Hall in New York; the Musikverein, Konzerthaus, and Alten Rathaus in Vienna; the Purcell Room in London; Queen’s Hall and Usher Hall in Edinburgh; and Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. She has also featured in leading festivals such as the Edinburgh International Festival (where she performed Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle alongside James Baillieu), the St Magnus Festival, East Neuk Festival, and Switzerland’s 1001 Harmonies Festival, with solo recitals at Salle Faller and Temple du Bas.
A prizewinner of the Trophée Mondial de l’Accordéon, the Manhattan and Vienna International Music Competitions, and a finalist in the keyboard category of the Royal Over-Seas League Competition, Sofía’s performances have been broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland’s Classical Now and BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.
In the United States, she has appeared with the Irving, Plano, San Angelo, and Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestras under conductor Héctor Guzmán. In Europe, she has performed with the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra led by Alastair Willis, and was praised by Ritmo Magazine for her “extraordinary expressive unity with the instrument” after her performance at the XL Alicante Concert Society-Oftalvist Competition.
Raised in Santander, Sofía began playing the accordion at the age of five. At thirteen, she was awarded a full scholarship to study at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh, where she received the Director’s Recital Prize in 2020. She is currently completing her studies with Djordje Gajic at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, supported by the ABRSM EU Undergraduate Scholarship. Her development has also been supported by the Craxton Memorial Trust, Drake Calleja Trust, Talent Unlimited, Help Musicians UK, the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, and the Hattori Foundation.
Sofía performs on a Pigini Sirius Compact bayan, handcrafted in Castelfidardo, Italy, and is dedicated to expanding the role of the classical accordion through performance, interdisciplinary creation, and new music.
